Par For The Course: Meandering Through The Chelsea Flower Market

 photography by so does estella

I have always been fascinated with flower markets. You forget you are in the city when amongst bushels of tightly packed greenery. Branches dotted with blossoms the color of pink frosting and moss peeking through crates wired shut--I'm just where I want to be.

Unless you have reason to buy wholesale, trips to the flower market usually mark some sort of special occasion. But of course that's no reason to forgo bouquets.

If you're in town and looking for flowers on the go, visit Kat Flower on select weekends at the Brooklyn Flea this Summer. I promise gorgeousness.

When it comes to flower bouquets, do you DIY? Or go for no fuss with pre-arranged bouquets? Ever tackled flowers for a special occasion?

Great post, Sana! Makes me wish I could go to the big city and go to a flower market, ha! I love how you really can get everything in big cities, it's just a matter of finding it.

gosh, do i ever miss NY and all the special spots to stroll. i could spend endless amounts of time in markets like this, lovely pics Sana!

i'm pretty simple when it comes to posies around the house. usually diy with white daisies or colorful gerbers. simple pleasures fulfilled. happy week! ♥

@bruce that doesn't surprise me one bit! :)
@eva thank you! you are right, it's really about finding things in a big city and then figuring out how to get all of your finds home!
@lynn i do love gerbers. they're easy to find and great for a splash of color. i love ps. you're welcome back to NY anytime!

I recall that one day before our wedding we were considering yanking some flowers from the side of the road for some last-minute DIY decorations. I chickened out because I didn't want to spend our wedding day in the slammer. But I love picking wild flowers (when they actually are wild).

I always do bouquets myself. When I was at NYU, I used to daydream about opening a pretty flower shop/coffee shop/bookstore in Brooklyn. I even drew up the floor plan for the place -- it, of course, had a perfect view of the river.

I try and do bouquets myself if I'm branching off from hydrangeas. It's so much more creative!

Nothing better than a flower market...the colors, smells and images are all so delightful! I used to love the flower markets in London and have used that and the English countryside as inspiration for my seriously floral/colorful guest bedroom.

So it looks like we have a lot of DIY-ers! Yeah!

@pip i think you just like to prove that you are tough by picking wildflowers -- thorns and all without gloves. :)

@brandi omg, it would be so successful! with your personality people would flock to your flower shop. I need to set aside some day dream time today as a matter of fact!

@caroline hydrangeas! white is definitely my favorite color for hydrangeas.

@danielle ahhh.i want to check out your guest bedroom if you have photos!

@kimia it can be so much fun, right?!

Love the photos! I really want to do a just a bushel-like bouquet of branches like these with just these little pops of color. Sadly I can't find them at the moment.

Thanks so much for the Fleet Foxes tip! Wonderful! And this is a post after my own heart! My favorite luxury is getting bunches of flowers from the farmers market and creating beautiful arrangements to fill our home. {although even a single bud brightens a room} Wishing you a lovely week! xo Samantha

I am horrible at flower arranging, but sometimes I find you don't need to go too over the top to make an impression. Sometimes a bunch of tulips are just as beautiful as an elaborate arrangement from the florist :)

these photos are just so beautiful, you have such a talent!
there is a wonderful florist by my house that has beautiful flowers and does non fussy hand tied bouquets that look so beautiful as though I picked them myself...so I guess I rely on her! Would love a go at arranging something myself some day xox

All of the farmers' markets around here have gorgeous flower stalls. I always want to pick up a bushel or orchids.

@christine i know, the bushels can be hard to find because they're usually at wholesale markets. i hope something turns up for you!

@samantha now i want to have a flower arranging party. wouldn't that be fun!?

@maddy you are so right. less can be more! :) French tulips are one of my favs.

@acv have a go at it! i've studied floral design and i had a blast.

@megan thank you! my father was just up north (CA) near you and said Spring was gorgeous. I'm waiting for photos from his trip. he is a real photographer :)
