Vintage Swin: Reclaimed Materials (& Country Living)

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about country living, but don't mind me -- this happens every year! I start to daydream about how wonderful it would be like to slow things down a little bit. No, we're not buying a farm, but what's the harm in wanting? For now, let us just admire the simplicity of life in the country and charm of a tin roof, worn wood and beautifully rusted hardware!

A couple of years ago, I couldn't help myself so we up and bought a house down south. Huge yard, old barn, and tons of trees. While it was great and we made wonderful new friends, I missed the hustle and bustle of NYC and the beaches of California. Sure, we could have visited those places more, but this was the whole point of having a house away from the city. It was supposed to be our new destination! Today, I'm in Brooklyn -- but with a country state of mind. :)

Are you a city dweller, who fits right in with apartments, skyscrapers and hurried pedestrians? Or do you prefer the charm of modest country homes built to compliment their landscape and provide a simpler way of life?  Both? Somewhere in between?

I'm definitely a country girl with a city heart! I was born & raised in NC and I love everything about that life, but only to visit now. Eveyrtime I go home to visit, I haveva great time, but just can't see myself living there anymore!

I think I'm a middle of the road kind of girl :) I can't do city living for every long without feeling overwhelmed and I like being close to great nightlife, restaurants, theaters to be a country girl. So I guess I'm suburbian girl all the way ;o)

Wow, you bought a house down south?! Do you still have it? That would be such a cool country getaway! :) I guess I fall somewhere in between city dwelling and country relaxing. I've grown up in the suburbs of LA my whole life, and I've come to really appreciate the balance. I can get away from the hustle and bustle to catch some sleep when I need, and I can go and enjoy all the city activities when I want. And plus, the beach is close by :) I guess I feel like I can have it all by staying in this in-between space :)

@niki country girl with a city heart, i like that! NC has a gorgeous countryside and the blue ridge mountains...i love how crisp it is there!

@maddy you kind of get the best of both worlds where you are. right? close enough to the city to pop in, yet you have the convenience of the burbs :)

@lillian well laguna is its own world. did i tell you i used to live in laguna niguel off niguel rd? i absolutely loved it there. i'd see deer every morning and then the beach was right over the hill. what's not to love about that. you have it made :)

@lillian oh yes, we still have the house. it's being rented because we just don't go there enough but we were there for a good bit of time. there are days when i really miss it.

I love the way you make your posts! I'm still on the fence (no pun intended), but I've really got no idea. I lived in London for a year, but wasn't fully IN the city, but I loved it when I'd venture into it/worked smack dab in the middle of the hustle and bustle, but I also love all that is nature. I know one thing for sure... I am not a fan of the in-between neighborhoods with the necessity of a car to drive to a 15 minute away Wal-Mart. That must be wonderful to have a bit of both whenever you'd like!

Oh, Sana, I know precisely how you feel! Honestly, I love the city and city life, but there's a big part of me that wants to settle down on some small farm, where I could grow some of my own food. Maybe just outside of NYC, so I could still make my way in on a regular basis and somehow take advantage of both worlds, yes?

Weekdays in the city and weekends in the country would be perfect for me!

Sana said...

@eva thank you! ooh outside of london wouldn't be bad at all! but then again, i'd settle for a flat in kensington, too. :)

@brandi yes! i've had the "real" farm dream too. sooner or later i have just got to do it.

completely understandable admiring of the simplicity of life and this wonderful space has me sighing deeply to breath in it's fresh country air. awesome photos, your story reminds me of that Diane Keaton movie "Baby Boom", same sort of bittersweet feeling about city mouse vs. country mouse. the great outdoors won in that case but i'm with you about the cities allures total.

happy weekend and sure hope the blogger conundrum didn't affect you too bad, i've been trying to simmer down since things went haywire and have used up all the alloted amounts of "goosefraba" for like a week! ♥

Somewhere in between for me! I live walking distance to Georgetown in DC and love where I live. I can walk to everything and there is always something going on. I own a 1935 Capecod in an old neighborhood...it's charming and fun to decorate. But my dream is to have a country home out in the middle of nowhere. My dream is to own an ultra modern prefab home off the grid near a lake or river. It'll be all white with only bare necessities...I'll keep my city home lookin' country modern and my country home lookin' city slick! Ahhh to dream is divine!

Ideally, I'd love to live in the city and have a country vacation home. No harm in dreaming, right? ;)

The thing I love about the city is, that even if I choose to stay in, there are a gazillion things to do just outside my door.
I'm in Los Angeles, but if I lived on the east coast, my city of choice would be Brooklyn. Hands down. I love it!!

@lynn oh, the blogger bust - that week i was swamped with shopping for Summer inventory which also took a lot of goosefraba, too. haha. thanks for the well wishes. xo the city mouse

@danielle an ultra mod prefab off the grid, now we're talking! i've considered that too. But you're good either way because Georgetown is a great little neighborhood!

@jo no harm in dreaming whatsoever! i do miss having the balance of LA. I think you're east in which case you have a plethora of under the radar cool spots. Oh and yes, I had a feeling you'd like my neighborhood. #brooklynlove

Great photos! That's what I like about Berlin--the countryside is really accessible here.

I like the hustle and bustle of the city but I also love the serenity of the countryside. I guess this is why I try to make my home have the urban country , cottagey feel. The best of both worlds!

Sana said...

@Christine Thanks! You are lucky to have the countryside so near. My feeling is that in Berlin, not everyone piles on the highway in search of the calm on a Friday afternoon. No? :)

@Gena I hear you! Urban Country style...just my speed!
